Avalon are a female barbershop and a cappella quartet based in the UK. We are proud to be the LABBS 2018 Quartet Champions!
We all met through The University of Bristol Barbershop Singers (TUBBS, now known as The Bristones). With homes in South East London, Sutton, Reading and Bristol, we travel frequently to sing together for rehearsals, gigs and contests.
Boo de Bruin (tenor) is a Science Teacher and Deputy Head of Department. She studied a PhD in Genetics. She joined TUBBS in 2011, and quickly took on the role of Senior Musical Director for two years, including taking TUBBS to the 2013 European Convention as special guests. During that time she also competed with her ladies’ quartet BOMB Squad, who were the 2013 LABBS Novice champions. Boo is a qualified BABS Music Judge, the LABBS Youth Co-ordinator and a former Chorus Manager, Section Leader and Deputy Director of Avon Harmony. She now sings tenor with Amersham A Cappella.
Karen Lillywhite (baritone) is the youngest of the quartet, and joined TUBBS as a Music undergraduate in 2014. She is now a fully fledged Music graduate, as well as a talented flautist. She has also tried her hand at musical direction, directing the Upper Voices within TUBBS, and she is a theatrical director having tackled Pygmalion in her 2nd year. She now sings baritone with South Gloucestershire-based chorus, Fascinating Rhythm. She spends her working days as a receptionist for a data, creative and tech solutions company. Last but not least, she gives us all serious hair envy.
Helen Warner (lead) discovered TUBBS in 2011. She won a Gold Mixed Quartet medal with Patchwork in 2013 and again in 2018 with Scramble. In 2014 she joined Region 31 chorus Viva Acappella and has thrown herself into chorus life, serving on the Performance Team, Music Team & Board, and winning a UK Silver medal, a European Bronze medal and going on to compete in Las Vegas! She played stunt tenor of DeciBelles Quartet when they competed at LABBS in 2016 and is a Candidate BABS Performance Judge. When not living & breathing barbershop, she is instead singing show tunes and Disney, reading Harry Potter, or working in the Director’s Office at a central London concert hall.
Sophie Wilson (bass) discovered barbershop before any of the others got a look in, when she joined TUBBS A Cappella in 2009. She formed a ladies’ quartet, Em & S, who competed in Region 31. She also sings in another a cappella group, Sound, and features in their first music video! Since coming back into the barbershop fold, Sophie has also joined the LABBS Youth Chorus. When Sophie isn’t singing all the very low notes, she is also a primary school teacher, and thoroughly enjoys looking after her small but hilarious charges.
